SHRM Certifications cover four knowledge areas of People, Organization, Workplace and Strategy including eight behavioral competencies of Leadership and Navigation, Ethical Practice, Business Acumen, Relationship Management, Consultation, Critical Evaluation, Global and Cultural Effectiveness, and Communication.
Based on a Body of Competency and Knowledge (SHRM BoCK™), these certifications are designed to elevate the HR profession around the world. They test the HR professional’s competency - the ability to put that knowledge to work through critical thinking and application - and demonstrate that the HR professional is a technical expert and has mastered the application of HR technical and behavioral competencies, through practice and experience, to drive business results.
SHRM - Certified Professional (SHRM-CP)
For HR professionals, who implement policies and strategies, serve as point of contact for staff and stakeholders, deliver HR services, and perform operational HR functions.
SHRM- Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP)
For HR professionals who develop strategies, lead the HR function, foster influence in the community, analyze performance metrics, and align HR strategies to organizational goals.

PIHRA Virtual Classroom Environment
This class will be delivered virtually just as if we were in a classroom. There will be face-to-face interaction using Zoom as our technology platform.
Technical requirements for the class include:
- Webcam. If your laptop/computer doesn’t have a camera, you can purchase one for around $30 from Logitech via Amazon.
- Quiet space without distractions
- Solid internet connection
Richard Dawson, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHRca, HRPM, sHRBP
Richard Dawson, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, PHRca, HRPM, sHRBP, is a highly tactical strategist with extensive HR management experience. He is a full-fledged generalist with industry acumen spanning employee relations, strategic management, talent acquisition, training and development, organizational effectiveness, talent management and full-cycle human resources. He is also senior certified in Federal and California Employment Laws, as well as, certified in CUE, Labor/Employee Relations. Additionally, Richard is an Adjunct Professor at Claremont Graduate University and HR Instructor at University of La Verne, teaching the SHRM-CP/SHRM-SCP classes.
As a board member, he has held various positions including Director of Communication and Director of Certification for CalSHRM, Vice-President of Leadership for PIHRA as well as, National SHRM roles as Diversity & Inclusion Expertise Panel and currently, Ethics, Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Expertise Panel. Richard believes that his greatest role is paying it forward, by assisting others with their success and he looks forward to working with you.
