Collective Genius: The Art and Practice of
Leading Innovation
by Linda Hill, Greg Brandeu, et.al.

Facilitator - Dana Mayhew, MPA, SPHR, PHRca, SHRM-SCP

Great leaders of innovation don’t fit the conventional mold. They’re not visionaries who set direction and inspire others to follow. Instead, they create the context in which others are both willing and able to innovate--think Pixar and their creative team. As one leader said, “My job is to set the stage, not to perform on it.” This is the key insight gleaned by the authors of Collective Genius who, led by Harvard leadership scholar Linda Hill, spent a decade studying leaders of innovative firms in the US, Europe, India, and Asia, including Google, Volkswagen, HCL Technologies, IBM, and the Sungjoo Group.

This is the key insight gleaned by the authors of Collective Genius who, led by Harvard leadership scholar Linda Hill, spent a decade studying leaders of innovative firms in the US, Europe, India, and Asia, including such companies as Pixar, Google, Volkswagen, HCL Technologies, IBM, and the Sungjoo Group.

The book takes the reader deep into the worlds of these extraordinary companies and the individuals who set the stage for innovation. Collective Genius reveals how they think and what they do to unleash and then harness the “collective genius” of those they lead.

She is the faculty chair of the Leadership Initiative and has chaired numerous HBS Executive Education programs, including the Young Presidents’ Organization Presidents’ Seminar and the High Potentials Leadership Program.

She has worked with organizations worldwide, including General Electric, Reed Elsevier, Accenture, Pfizer, IBM, MasterCard, Mitsubishi, Morgan Stanley, the National Bank of Kuwait, AREVA, and the Economist.

Dana Mayhew, MPA, SPHR, PHRca, SHRM-SCP founded the HR Roundtable and Book-club. A serious reader, her ardent belief is that managers can be taught to be great leaders. With the current book as a catalyst for penetrating conversation, the roundtable serves as not only a springboard for HR thought leaders to share their visions and experiences, but an entrée for individuals choosing to dip their toes into HR as a professional. Yet, it’s bigger than that, the roundtable attracts professionals in related fields such as employment law, psychology, organization development, benefits, science and engineering. It serves as a vehicle to share experiences and support each other in the lifelong business of learning.
